General OZEV Grant Questions
What is the OZEV grant?
The OZEV grant is a UK government subsidy managed by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. It provides up to £500 toward the cost of purchasing and installing a home or workplace EV charger. The grant is deducted directly from your installer invoice — you never receive cash.
How much is the OZEV grant in 2026?
As of 1 April 2026, the maximum grant is £500 per socket. This increased from £350. For businesses using the Workplace Charging Scheme, the maximum is £20,000 (40 sockets at £500 each).
Is the OZEV grant still available in 2026?
Yes. Five grant schemes remain active until 31 March 2027. Owner-occupiers with driveways are not eligible, but renters, flat owners, landlords, and businesses can apply. The government can close schemes with four weeks' notice — apply early.
When does the OZEV grant end?
The current grants are confirmed until 31 March 2027. This is stated to be the final year of the current home and workplace grant portfolio. Do not delay — apply as soon as you confirm eligibility.
Eligibility Questions
I own my house with a driveway — do I qualify?
No. Homeowners with private driveways were removed from the OZEV scheme on 1 April 2022. You cannot claim regardless of how recently you purchased your EV. See the full eligibility criteria.
I rent my home — do I qualify?
Yes. The Renters and Flat Owners scheme is specifically designed for tenants. You need off-street parking, an eligible EV, and written permission from your landlord. The grant is £500 per socket.
What if I have no driveway at all?
You may still qualify through the On-Street Parking grant. This scheme provides £500 toward an EV charger installed using a cross-pavement gully solution — a cable that runs safely under the pavement to your on-street parking. Your OZEV-authorised installer will handle council notification. This scheme runs until 31 March 2027.
Can I get the grant for a second-hand EV?
Yes, provided the vehicle is on the OZEV-approved electric vehicles list and you are the registered keeper. New or second-hand — the grant amount is the same.
Can I apply if I have a leased EV?
Yes. Leased vehicles qualify provided they are on the OZEV-approved vehicles list and you are named as the primary user. You must provide a copy of your lease agreement as part of your application.
What if I move house after the installation?
The grant is tied to the installation address. The charger becomes a fixture of the property. If you move, the new occupant benefits from the charger. You may apply for a new grant at your new address, subject to eligibility checks at that address.
Application Questions
How do I apply for the OZEV grant?
Since 1 April 2026, customers apply directly at find-government-grants.service.gov.uk. Create an account, submit your property and vehicle details with supporting documents, and OZEV confirms eligibility before installation begins. Your installer then claims the grant after completion. Can I install the charger before applying?
No. OZEV rules strictly require that you receive grant approval before installation begins. Installing before approval permanently disqualifies you from the grant for that address.
What happens if my OZEV application is rejected?
OZEV will notify you by email with the specific reason. Common reasons: missing or incorrect documentation, property not meeting off-street parking criteria, chosen chargepoint not on the approved list, or vehicle not on the approved list. You can address the issue and reapply.
Does my installer have to be OZEV-approved?
Yes — strictly. The installation must be carried out by an OZEV-authorised installer. Using a non-approved electrician, however qualified, invalidates the grant claim completely. techtron® works with a UK-wide network of OZEV-authorised installers.
Charger Questions
Which EV chargers qualify for the OZEV grant?
Only chargers on the OZEV-approved product list qualify. techtron® EV7 EVO, EV7 VOX, EVU7 NEO, EVU7 PRIMO and all EV11/EV22 variants are on the approved list. The Tesla Wall Connector is not currently on the approved list — Tesla owners should choose a Type 2 compatible charger such as the techtron® EV7 EVO, which is compatible with all EVs including Tesla.
What power output do I need?
For most UK homes, a 7 kW (32A) single-phase charger is sufficient, charging most EVs from near-empty overnight in 6–10 hours. Homes with 3-phase supply can opt for 11 kW. Businesses and commercial sites should consider 11 kW or 22 kW — see our business EV charging guide.
