Who Qualifies for the OZEV EV Charger Grant?

Do Homeowners with Driveways Qualify?

No — and this is the most commonly misunderstood point. Homeowners who own a house with their own private driveway have not been eligible since 1 April 2022. If you own your home and have a dedicated driveway, you cannot claim the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant.

The scheme now targets those who have historically faced the biggest barriers to home charging: renters, flat owners, landlords, and those without private off-street parking. If you are unsure, our two-minute eligibility checker gives you a quick answer.

The Four Groups Who Qualify

1 — Renters & Flat Owners

You qualify if you rent your home OR own a flat (leasehold), AND you have access to designated private off-street parking. You will need written permission from your landlord or freeholder before applying — our flat owner and apartment guide covers exactly what that letter must contain.

2 — Residential Landlords

Landlords of domestic rental properties can claim up to £500 per socket across up to 200 sockets per year. You must be registered with Companies House or VAT-registered with HMRC. The charger must be for tenant use and located at or near private off-street parking. Full detail is in our landlord OZEV grant guide.

3 — Businesses & Workplaces (Workplace Charging Scheme)

The Workplace Charging Scheme covers UK-registered businesses, charities, and public sector organisations. Up to £500 per socket, up to 40 sockets (£20,000 total). You do not need company vehicles to qualify — employee charging counts.

4 — On-Street Parking Households

No driveway? You may still qualify if you install an approved cross-pavement gully charging solution at your home. Available until 31 March 2027 at £500 per socket. This requires council notification and an approved gully provider — your OZEV-authorised installer will advise.

Who Does NOT Qualify

  • Homeowners who own a house with their own private driveway (ineligible since April 2022)
  • Anyone who has already claimed the EVHS grant or this grant at the same property
  • Applicants whose chosen charger is not on the OZEV-approved product list
  • Applicants using an installer that is not OZEV-authorised
  • Chargepoints already installed before OZEV confirms eligibility — the order of events is strict

Vehicle Eligibility

Your vehicle must appear on the OZEV-approved electric vehicles list. This covers most modern battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles — including models from Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Polestar, Jaguar, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, and many others. The vehicle must be owned, leased, on a company car scheme, or have a confirmed order. Second-hand EVs qualify provided they are on the approved list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I have a leased vehicle?

Yes. Leased vehicles qualify provided they appear on the OZEV-approved electric vehicles list. You must be named as the primary user and have proof of the lease agreement for your application.

What if I move house after getting the grant?

The grant is tied to the installation address, not the applicant. If you move, you cannot remove or take the charger with you as a grant-funded item. You would need to apply for a new grant at your new address (subject to new eligibility checks) if you qualify.

Can a sole trader apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme?

Yes. Sole traders with a business address that has off-street parking and staff can apply for the WCS. Home-based businesses (registered address = home address) may qualify for up to £350 per socket under a separate WCS provision — confirm with your OZEV-authorised installer. See the full WCS guide.
