Installing a home EV charger is one of the best investments an electric vehicle owner can make. A professionally installed 7 kW smart charger can charge most EVs overnight, and when paired with the OZEV grant, the net cost is dramatically reduced.
Before Installation — What You Need
- A modern consumer unit (fuse board) with a spare MCB slot
- A suitable external wall or garage wall near your parking space
- A 240V single-phase supply (standard UK domestic supply)
- For 3-phase (11 kW / 22 kW): confirmed 3-phase supply at the property
- OZEV grant approval before installation begins — this is a strict requirement

The Installation Process
- Survey — your OZEV-authorised installer visits to assess your consumer unit, cable routing, and parking space suitability. Free with techtron® approved installers.
- Quote and Grant Application — installer provides a detailed quote; you apply for the OZEV grant via gov.uk Find a Grant before work begins.
- Cable Run — installer runs armoured cable from your consumer unit to the charger location, typically through wall, attic, or external conduit.
- Charger Mounting — charger is wall-mounted at an accessible height; position and orientation agreed with you.
- Connection and Testing — charger connected to supply, RCBO fitted at consumer unit, earth bonding checked, full functional test completed.
- Certification — BS 7671 electrical installation certificate issued; Essential Safety Check completed.
- App Setup — smart charger connected to the techtron® SmartApp for scheduling, solar divert, and remote monitoring.
Typical Installation Costs (2026)
A standard 7 kW home EV charger installation in the UK costs £700–£1,400 including the unit and installation. With the £500 OZEV grant, eligible customers pay typically £400–£900 net.

Installation Day — What to Expect
A typical 7 kW home charger installation takes 2–4 hours. The installer will:
- Isolate the supply and work safely — you may be without power briefly
- Route cable discreetly and neatly through walls or conduit
- Mount the charger at a height and angle you agree on
- Test all connections and safety devices
- Walk you through the techtron® SmartApp setup
- Leave the property clean and issue your BS 7671 electrical certificate
3-Phase Installation (11 kW / 22 kW)
Properties with 3-phase supply — most new builds and many commercial buildings — can support 11 kW or 22 kW AC charging. techtron® offers the EV11 EVO, EV11 VOX, EV22 EVO, and EV22 VOX for 3-phase applications. Installation is more complex and typically takes a full day.
How Long Does OZEV Grant Approval Take?
OZEV typically processes straightforward applications within 5–10 working days. Applications selected for audit may take 2–4 weeks. Apply as soon as you confirm eligibility — do not wait until your new EV arrives, as you cannot begin installation until approval is received.
